Aston Martin to Build 28 James Bond DB5s – Complete With Working Gadgets

If you were to draw up a list of the world’s most famous cars, it would almost certainly feature James Bond’s Aston Martin DB5. First introduced in Goldfinger (1964) and later reappearing in other Bond films including GoldenEye (1995), Skyfall (2012) and Spectre (2015), the gadget-laden DB5 is synonymous with 007, as well as being the basis for one of the world’s coolest toys in the shape of Corgi’s 1:46-scale replica.

If the thought of playing with those little toy cars brings a grin to your face, the news that Aston Martin is to build a limited run of full-size Bond DB5 replicas is sure to leave you both shaken and stirred. Officially classed as continuation cars, the Goldfinger DB5s have come about as part of a collaboration between the British car-maker and EON Productions, the company behind the James Bond films. As such, not only will the Silver Birch Goldfinger DB5 continuation editions look exactly like their silver screen counterparts, but they will also feature some of the gadgets that played such an important role in making the Bond franchise what it is today.

Aside from the confirmed inclusion of revolving number plates, Aston remains tight-lipped as to exactly what the gadgets will consist of, although it seems unlikely that the ejector seat will make the cut. What we do know is that the cars are being developed with the help of Chris Corbould, who has been a special effects supervisor on eight Bond films since the 1980s, as well as working on Batman, Tomb Raider, X-Men, Star Wars and more. So if these DB5s end up being able to jump into hyperspace you know who to blame.

The cars will be built by Aston Martin Works in Newport Pagnell and are scheduled to be completed in 2020. Under the bonnet they will feature a 282bhp, 4.0-litre straight-six engine that Aston says will be good for a top speed of 148mph, and enable a 0-62mph time of 7.1 seconds.

The other number you need to know is the price, which comes in at £2.75 million plus local taxes. With Aston Martin set to sell 25 of the Bond DB5s out of a total production run of 28 (of the remaining three one each will go to Aston Martin and EON productions, while the third is set to be auctioned for charity) it certainly looks set to be a fruitful exercise for a company that continues to go from strength to strength under the guidance of CEO Andy Palmer.

Speaking about the Bond car, Palmer said: “To own an Aston Martin has long been an aspiration for James Bond fans, but to own a Silver Birch DB5, complete with gadgets and built to the highest standards in the very same factory as the original James Bond cars? Well, that is surely the ultimate collectors’ fantasy.”

There is one major caveat (aside from the price), however, which is that the cars will not be road legal. Not that such a thing would ever stop 007, of course.
